IGCI had a previous University history that was focused on the human dimensions of global environmental change with an emphasis on climate and community planning in the environmental sphere. Many alliances were formed in the years at the University and the new IGCI will, over the coming months and years, reconnect with its roots while forging new relationships. The new IGCI which was established in 2011 announced its first project in 2012.

Other projects are being pursued in the areas of sea level rise and coastal protection, and sustainable agricultural and rural development through the consideration of climate variability, extreme events and long term climate change. The Institute is also interested in providing training for capacity building. Relationships with other training and research Institutes are being sought and we welcome communication with groups interested in partnering with IGCI in such projects.
